The course aims at developing an understanding of the basic ideas of statistical reasoning, i.e. what statistical analysis to be used, and how are the results of the statistical analysis to be interpreted? The course presents statistical concepts and introduces descriptive and inferential statistical methods of analyses and their applications in agribusiness. Students gain hands-on experience of statistical analysis by designing and applying how to analyze real survey data and agricultural case studies by themselves.

The course provides an introduction to classical econometric theory and statistics used in economics. It thereby enables students to follow the theoretical and applied literature in econometrics and applied economic-social analysis. Furthermore, theoretical and applied exercises provide students with opportunities to implement the theoretical material in the context of applied problems in agricultural economic and social analysis. The course focuses primarily on cross-section data methods, and the fundamentals of time series data methods especially for forecasting.

Environmental economics is an applied field in economics; it is based on microeconomic theory.  Through this course, we will apply the theory and tools of economics to address environmental problems such as air and water pollution. We begin the course with a review of the theory of social choice, efficiency and competitive markets. We then move on to discuss the failure of markets to achieve an efficient allocation of resources in the presence of externalities, like pollution. We will spend significant time evaluating different regulatory instruments for controlling pollution, including emissions taxes, tradable permits, and pollution standards.
The course combines theoretical analysis with discussions on specific environmental policies as applied to water, air pollution, energy, climate change and human health issues.

This course will be directed mainly into analyzing development projects as part of the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA). The economic analysis of development projects has had a relatively long history. Initially, environmental impacts were deemed external to development projects, and hence were excluded from economic analysis. Subsequently, it became the practice to describe environmental impacts quantitatively.
Economic, social and environmental change is inherent to development. Whilst development aims to bring about positive change it can lead to conflicts. In the past, the promotion of economic growth as the motor for increased well-being was the main development thrust with little sensitivity to adverse social or environmental impacts. The need to avoid adverse impacts and to ensure long term benefits led to the concept of sustainability. This has become accepted as an essential feature of development if the aim of increased well-being and greater equity in fulfilling basic needs is to be met for this and future generations.
