The course introduces students to Spanish literature in general. Reading of various literary texts will be based on representative texts in order to familiarize students with literary terminology and the methods of text interpretation and make them realize the importance of general knowledge for literature. Students will learn to work in groups. Through their group discussions and short presentations about the read materials they will display better cross-cultural communication skills via comparing different cultures. Besides acquiring theoretical knowledge about Spanish literature, the students are expected to continue improving their language competence. Discussions about the studied materials and oral & written interpretations are main parts of the intended communicative lecture. Studied Ages are: Middle Age, Pre-Renaissance, Renaissance.

The course gives through some selected examples an overview of the development of Spanish literature from the Seventeenth Century until the Nineteenth Century. Studied literary movements are: Baroque, Neoclassicism, Romanticism, Realism and Naturalism.

This course presents the leading tendencies of 20th century Spanish literature, considering the different genres, the new intellectual ideas and the search for new forms. These different aspects will be studied by analyzing representative literary extracts.

This course tends to offer the participant and ample understanding of contemporary Spanish thought. After situating contemporary Spain in her ideological and political context, participants proceed to analyze the nation's intellectual, social and human development. The final object will be an attempt to identify a Spanish thought in a board sense.

This course, whose content varies from one semester to another, deals with a specific topic on or linked to the Spanish language. It is determined on the basis of students needs and the instructors area specialization or research interests. The course usually provides an in-depth investigation of a certain topic that has not been covered in the language courses offered in the study plan.

This course gives a general overview of Spanish-American literature from its beginning in the 15th century until the 20th century. It concentrates on a selection of masterpieces in novel, poetry and/or short stories e.g. Ruben Dario, Pablo Neruda, Jorge Luis Borges, Gabriel Garcia Marquez, etc., and also introduces students to the differences between Latin-American Spanish and Spanish language in Spain.

In this course participants are introduced to characteristics of different kinds of media. Students receive an overview about different categories of newspapers and magazines. The different kinds of newspapers and magazines are described; background information about different products of the press is acquired. Articles from newspapers and magazines are presented by students and then discussed. Basic knowledge about the Spanish press laws is gathered.

The participants should intensively tackle with Spanish in the Field of Tourism. At the beginning of the course, students listen to descriptions of different kinds of journeys. Advantages and disadvantages of different ways of travelling are discussed. Reading and discussing prospects the learners collect information on sights and monuments in Jordan. Students are then asked to give short presentations or these sights and monuments. The special vocabulary necessary to describe archaeological places should be acquired.

This course gives a general overview of the civilization of Spain through several aspects like culture, society, history, geography, politics and economy and their influence on the literary production and intellectual development. It also concentrates on the historical relationship of Spain with Latin-America and their common cultural heritage.

This course is an introduction to the study of the rise of the novel in Spanish language, its development until the present and historical and cultural background. It focuses on reading various literary examples from each period and emphasizes the importance of the novel in Spanish contemporary literature.

In combination with Grammar (1), the aim of this course is to enrich the students’ grammatical knowledge of the Spanish language. It will introduce students deeper into the various morphological and syntactic processes previously studied.

The course introduces students into the phonetic alphabet and compares both international and Spanish phonetic alphabets. It mainly concentrates on position and articulation regularities and describes cognitive and physiological processes during the production of phonetic segments (sounds and sound connections).

This course builds on students` previous experience with Spanish, adding to it more language rules, more vocabulary and more sentence structure, enabling them to read, write, listen and speak at a higher level within the context of daily situations.

In combination with Spanish for Beginners (2) and (3), this course introduces students to the basics of Spanish language and Spanish culture. The aim of the course is to develop communication skills in everyday life and simple situations. The course proposes a full competence in communication strategies and not only a linear assimilation of grammatical knowledge.

The course is regarded as a continuation for the other two Spanish courses (Spanish for Beginners 1 & 2); it trains the four language skills, listening comprehension, writing, reading and oral skills, on a more advanced level. After finishing this course, the student will be able to act with self-assurance in everyday life situations. The course contains some new topics such as: description of people’s appearance, education and school, entertainment and TV, work and economics in Spain, industry and other more topics related to the Spanish society and culture.

At the end of the second semester the students take the Spanish Proficiency Test (SPT). Those who pass the test should be able to follow the second year courses which will be taught entirely in Spanish. Those who do not pass take this course which is meant to fill the gap between first year general language courses and second year more specialized courses. In this course the student has to acquire the language proficiency to be able to follow the second year courses. For this reason, the course will focus on listening and speaking.
