* Understanding the basic structure and cell biology of periodontal tissues. * Discuss composition of plaque and its importance in initiating periodontal disease. * Outline the importance of calculus and other plaque retentive factors in the etiology of periodontal disease. * Discuss the occlusion and its relationship to the periodontal disease. * Introduce epidemiological incidences, prevalences and risk factors of periodontal disease.

To provide students with basic skills for surgical procedures as part of surgical periodontal treatment such as flap designs, gingivectomy and new trends in surgical modalities.
5th year
  
The objectives of this course are: • To improve the manual dexterity of the students. • The students should be able to recognize periodontal health, gingivitis and periodontitis. • The students should learn to use the instruments for scaling and polishing. • To provide the students with the fundamental practical skills of Periodontology necessary to be able to deal with patients that needs periodontal treatment in a clinical setting. • To allow the students to apply the concept and principles of manual scaling.
