This course is designed to increase student understanding of basic and fundamental concepts of organizational theory, design, and change.  It aims to increase student awareness of the theoretical and practical aspects of modern organization theories. Changes in the environment, combined with new developments in information technology, have led to a new revolution in change, design, management, and culture of the organization.

This is a graduate level course designed to acquaint students with the theoretical foundations and practical considerations of regulatory governance.  The course will provide a sound understanding of why, when, how a government develops a regulatory policy to manage and reform its regulatory systems. In other words, the course will concentrate on the development and enhancement of a governmental policy to “regulate the regulators”.

Specifically, the course will emphasize how the entrepreneurial spirit is transforming traditional public administration to be catalytic government – steering, not rowing; competitive-driven; transforming rule-driven organizations; results-oriented, and customer-driven government.

It will increase student awareness of the theoretical and practical aspects of good governance. The aim is to familiarize students with various usage of these concepts. The main focus is on the environment of modern public organizations in terms of organizational values such as democracy, transparency, responsiveness, civic engagement, social capital, the competent state, and human rights.

Specifically, the course will emphasize different approaches and indicators to assess leadership effectiveness. These approaches include behavior, traits, situation, and power influence approaches of leadership.

This course deals with human behavior in a variety of organizations. Conceptual frameworks, case discussions, and skill-oriented activities are applied to each topic. Topics include communications, motivation, group dynamics, leadership, power, the influence of technology, and organizational design and development. Class sessions and assignments are intended to help students acquire the skills that managers need to improve organizational relationships and performance and understanding of basic and fundamental concepts of administrative behavior (AB). The course will increase student awareness of the theoretical and practical aspects of AB.

Specifically, the main aim of the course is to enrich the students' perspectives about the foundations of excellence using strategic thinking, culture awareness and culture building, leadership roles in creating excellence, and the necessary skills to achieve excellence.

The focus will be on the daily practices of total quality management in public and private services. The significance of this course stems from the fact that productivity and quality in the public sector have become central and critical concerns of the government, and public agencies in particular. This is because productivity and quality open the door to higher standards of living, shorter working hours, and more benefits for public sector employees and citizens in general.

This graduate level course will introduce the student to the conceptual framework of ethics and its role in public and private organizations. During this term we will examine and explore ethical considerations and how they are integrated in public and business models – for example, how ethical considerations might influence an organization’s decision making, social responsibility, and the expectations of businesses and the public in addressing social problems such as poverty, crime, environmental protection, equal rights, public health, and education improvement.

This graduate course is designed to acquaint students with basic and fundamental concepts of local government, administration, and development. It aims to increase awareness of the theoretical and practical operation of local governments as well as their functional and structural relations with national government and inter/intra-relations with and among local governmental units. The main theme is to understand the local government patterns – such as the French Pattern, the British Pattern, and traditional patterns – that exist in developing countries. A comparative perspective will be adopted in different regions such as the Middle East, South East Asia and, Africa, with a focus on Jordan. The comparison will include the legal and administrative development of the local governments and their function in and commitment to socioeconomic development. The core objective is to raise students’ awareness of the multifarious and multifaceted issues, problems, and challenges confronting local governments and local development.

This graduate course is designed to acquaint students with the fundamental concepts of decentralization, democratic governance, and civil society in comparative perspectives. The course aims to increase awareness of the theoretical and practical dimensions of decentralization by:  exploring the effects of decentralization on the relationship between citizens and the state in developing countries;  looking simultaneously at both the macro-level forces driving decentralization and the micro-level responses from civil society and local governments in order to better understand the impact of decentralization on democratic governance;  understanding actual dynamic processes of decentralization. Four major forms of public sector decentralization arrangements are included in this course: administrative decentralization, political decentralization, fiscal decentralization, and market decentralization.

This is a graduate level course designed to help students enhance their competency in using management control systems. Since high level management cannot always direct each employee’s efforts and observe all outcomes, it must utilize a management control system to help guide employees to take optimal action towards proper implementation of the organization’s guiding strategy. Management control systems are organizational methods, policies, and procedures that are used to monitor and direct the execution of organization’s strategy in order to attain organizational goals. The same principles can be applied in governmental, non-governmental, profit, and not-for-profit organizations. In particular, the course is designed to allow students to gain knowledge, insight, and analytical skills related to management control systems and strategic implementation.
