Course Objectives: 1. Understanding the definition and material of pharmacognosy science and its applications in therapy and pharmacy. 2. Acquainting knowledge of natural drugs, their classification, production, evaluation as well as their general chemistry. 3. Understanding type, chemistry, use and applications of products of plant primary metabolism including carbohydrates, lipids, and their derivatives.
B.Sc. - 3rd Year

The biosynthesis, isolation and identification of the primary and secondary plant constituents and discussion of natural drugs containing these constituents constitute the programmer of the chemistry of medicinal plants. During this course the main plant active constituents from chemical and pharmacological points of view will be covered. The course will specifically discuss topics related to secondary constituents derived via acetate-malonate and shikimic acid pathways.

During this course the main plant active constituents from chemical and pharmacological points of view will be covered. The course will specifically discuss topics related to secondary constituents derived via mevalonic acid pathway such as terpenoids and alakloids.
B.Sc. - 4rd Year

The course provides the student with basic information on analytical and instrumental methodologies in plant sciences and their utilization in natural products investigations, in particular herbal drugs identification and evaluation. This encompasses methods and techniques of extraction, separation, purification, identification and evaluation (qualitative and quantitative) of natural products and their derived substances and metabolites. Will be covered topics related to analysis of plant-derived extracts and plant products used as food, pharmaceutical, and/or medicinal substances, where emphasis will be placed upon chemical, spectroscopic and chromatographic evaluation. Methods of analysis used to evaluate selected herbal drugs approved and included in herbal pharmacopoeias and compendial sources will be given and discussed.
B.Sc. - 4th year

Student will be acquainted with necessary knowledge and practical skills for microscopical identification of medicinal herbs prepared mainly as crude drug (powdered) from the used parts of some important medicinal plants covered in the theoretical course. Identification will be based on the characteristic histological key elements of each plant organ observed under microscope and supported, in certain cases, by chemical tests.
B.Sc. - 3rd year

This practical course includes laboratory sessions emphasizing the main phytoanalysis-experiments of selected primary and secondary metabolites containing plant materials and products. Techniques related to the separation process using column chromatography, paper chromatography, thin layer chromatography and factors affecting separation are studied by various experiments. The qualitative and quantitative analysis of these metabolites will also be covered.
