Description
Academic Year
Clinical Biochemistry
Clinical biochemistry applies basic biochemistry and analytical chemistry to medical diagnosis, treatment and management. It provides a sound, objective basis on which to gauge the extent of a clinical disorder, the biochemical consequences of a particular disease process, and the response to therapy. This programme is designed to provide students with the basic skills needed for a career in clinical biochemistry within the health service. Course Units include: Analytical Methods I and II; Homeostasis and Nutrition; Endocrinology; Biochemistry of Major Organ Disorders; Biochemical Screening in Health and Disease
4th year
Genetics and Immunology (PharmD program)
This goal of this course is to help students understand what constitutes a balanced diet. It will cover essential nutrients, energy balance, ideal body weight, eating disorders, food packaging and labelling, health foods and weight loss. The special dietary needs of young adults, athletes and vegetarians will also be examined, and students will learn how computers and other technology can be used in nutritional analysis and research.
3rd year
Biochemistry I, II
Introduction to modern biochemical experimental methods of studying chemical and physical properties of biological molecules. Includes the separation, identification, and characterization of biomolecules.
2nd year
Pharmacokinetics and Pharmacokinetics Worshops
This introductory workshop provides an opportunity for drug development scientists to develop an understanding of basic pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic concepts and the role they play in efficient drug discovery and development. It is geared for scientists that are not hands-on modelers but need a basic understanding of pk/pd principles. The workshop will discuss the implications of the FDA White Paper "Innovation / Stagnation: Challenge and Opportunity on the Critical Path to New Medical Products", which proposes utilization of model-based approaches to improve drug development knowledge management and decision making. A unique feature of the course is the access to the computer package WinNonlin to undertake hands-on exercises on real-life case studies and the availability of course tutors to help in problem solving.
