This course is based on the study and analysis of such world literary masterpieces as The Odyssey, The Oresteia, The Epic of Gilgamesh, The Bible, The Book of Songs, Islamic Sufi Literature, One Thousand and One Nights, The Holy Koran and The Divine Comedy.
Third Year
  
This course aims to develop students' critical thinking by training them in various schools of literary criticism. After a short survey of the history of criticism, students will focus on the recent developments in literary theory, especially post-structuralism.
Second Year
  
This course provides a study of Romanticism and Victorianism. The prominent Romantic poets and essayist, and their Victorian counterparts, are to be studied at length. Selections from the novels and plays of the period may be chosen to illustrate the generic and thematic richness of this important century.

A study of 20th – Century American literature. The course will focus on the major poets, novelists and dramatists of the period through a study and a survey of representative works. It will also lay emphasis on the main literary concepts, movements and schools characteristic of the period.
Third Year
  
Emphasis is placed on the understanding and appreciation of poetry as a literary genre. Various forms of poetry are to be presented and critically studied. Those include selections from different literary periods in English and American literature, such forms include: the sonnet, elegy, ode, ballad and the like.

The course aims at acquiring the students with the definition, function and methodology of comparative literature. It considers several problems such as terminology, literary influence, borrowing, common-places, the distinction between comparative, general and world literature as well as the contrast between the French and the American schools. In addition, it deals with the relationship of literature to other disciplines such as philosophy, psychology and the other arts. The role and use of translation and genre are also considered. The course concludes with a thorough investigation of mutual influence between Arabic literature and Western tradition, particularly English and American literature.

This course offers a detailed analysis of the works of the most prominent poets in the 20th century starting from Hardy, Yeats, Frost, Eliot, Pound and the poets of World War I. Poets of the 30's and 40's of the 20th century are next. The course ends up with the contemporary poets as Laupel, Periman, Plath, Larkin, Hopper, Heaney and others. The course also concentrates on the formal and linguistic aspects of poetry on the one hand, and its reflection of the social and ideological issues, on the other hand.
