In our work published in General Pharmacology in 1995 (please refer to my published research), we developed the hypothesis that is now widely accepted that smooth muscle of the pulmonary arteries is the sensor for hypoxia, but not other structures; and that hypoxic vasoconstriction, paradoxically, is associated with high oxygen free radicals (superoxide anions?), which may cause the contraction.
