Description
Academic Year
Principles of Commercial Law
This course is designed to prepare students to take advanced commercial law courses. Students will develop basic research and writing skills necessary for the study and practice of law in the commercial context. It contains an introduction to the legal system as it affects business activity. Principles of the law of contracts, agency relationships, commercial paper and sales are discussed and analyzed through the use of the Commercial Code, cases and problems. Emphasis is upon the law and business relationships.
First Year
Commercial Regulations
This course is planned to give business, economics and management students a basic knowledge of commercial law. It highlights some aspects of commercial regulations in Jordan including: the legal concepts of businesses; the responsibilities of merchants and companies; negotiable instruments; and corporate law. It expands to highlight other branches of the law to give a broader understanding of the legal environment in general.
First Year
Comparative Law
The course will then explore several substantive areas of religious laws with concentration on Islamic Law. The course covers issues including financial and economic laws, criminal law, and matrimonial law. It will encourage students to tackle issues discussed in the class through a transsystemic lens, thus compare Islamic law to common and civil laws. The course will also encompass case studies regarding controversial issues such as human rights, women’s rights, and minority rights under Islamic law.
2007/2008 (taught at McGill University Faculty of Law)
Corporations
This course provides students with a basic understanding of the law that governs business organizations, particularly publicly held corporations. The course tackles the following forms of companies: partnerships; limited partnerships; implied trusts; public and private shareholding companies; and limited liability companies. Aspects of the laws of agency and partnership are first considered to highlight the relationship to corporate law. In turning to corporations, the course considers the rights and duties of boards of directors, officers, and shareholders. The course introduces students to case law and statutory systems, as well as aspects of the securities laws that regulate business organizations.
Second Year
International Trade Law
This course will study the legal framework governing international economic relations and global business. Students will gain an understanding of why and how national and international institutions regulate world trade. Particular attention will be paid to the evolution of international trade regulation and the pressures on existing regulatory concepts and principles. Topics will include WTO, the protection of intellectual property, the promotion of international services transactions, dispute resolution and free trade agreements.
