This course builds on students` previous experience with Turkish, adding to it more language rules, more vocabulary and more sentence structure as necessary, enabling them to read, write, listen and speak at a higher level within the context of daily situations.

The course is a continuation for the other two Turkish courses (Turkish for Beginners 1 & 2); it trains the four language skills, listening comprehension, writing, reading and oral skills, on a more advanced level. After finishing this course, the student will be able to act with self-assurance in everyday life situations. The course contains some new topics such as: description of people’s appearance, education and school, entertainment and TV, work and economics in Turkey, industry and other more topics related to Turkish society and culture.

This Course targets students with no prior knowledge of the Turkish language and aims at gradually introducing and developing all main four skills: reading, writing, speaking and listening through situations and contexts of the daily life.

After the second semester of the first year, the students can sit for a proficiency exam in Turkish. Students who pass this exam will be able to continue studying the Turkish courses offered in the second year. Students who fail in this exam or opt not to take it should study and pass Intensive Turkish that will bridge the gap between the courses offered in the first year, which are general, and the courses offered in the second year, which are specialized. The course focuses on conversation and listening skills.

This course concentrates on the description of the basics of Turkish morphology and syntax, from a theoretical and practical point of view. Students will be systematically trained in various morphological (word structure and its elements) and syntactical (elements of the sentence and its functions and interrelations) processes.

This course trains students to translate texts from Turkish into Arabic. It highlights general linguistic and cultural difficulties of translation and shows students how to overcome them. It also includes translation of practical texts (e.g. documents, certificates, directions of use, etc.) as well as translation of short literary texts and newspaper articles. Students will also be equipped with the terminology of various fields through selected texts and articles.

The course introduces students into the phonetic alphabet and compares both international and Turkish phonetic alphabets. It mainly concentrates on position and articulation regularities and describes cognitive and physiological processes during the production of phonetic segments (sounds and sound connections).

The aim of this course is to train students in writing free and guided compositions (e.g. narratives, descriptions, letters, etc.). It focuses on the different types of texts and styles of writing depending on the context and intention of the texts (types of speech and writing strategies). General rules of written Turkish (accentuation, punctuation, word division, etc.) will also be studied.

This course introduces the skills of debate, effective reading and inferential thinking through the use of selected texts. The student should be able to recognize the structure of the text and to utilize the acquired vocabulary, expressions and structures in his discussion.

This course represents an introduction of Didactics (the WHAT) and the Methodology (the HOW) of teaching of a foreign language. We shall handle the methodological concepts that have had a substantial impact on teaching Turkish as a foreign language throughout history, but also the modern methods that have proved to produce positive results in the past 10-15 years. The students will learn to recognize the advantages and the disadvantages of the different methods of teaching and how to plan and perform a successful and interesting lesson.

In this course participants are introduced to characteristics of different kinds of media. Students receive an overview about different categories of newspapers and magazines. The different kinds of newspapers and magazines are described; background information about different products of the press is acquired. Articles from newspapers and magazines are presented by students and then discussed. Basic knowledge about the Turkish press laws is gathered.

This course will introduce students into the technical language of some of the most important economic branches and into its special lexicon and syntax. Students will be trained to understand and master business letters and their replies as well as to speak in formal interviews.

This course gives a general overview of the Turkish civilization through several aspects like culture, society, history, geography, politics and economy and their influence on the literary production and intellectual development. It also concentrates on the Turkish historical relationship with its neighbours and their common cultural heritage.
