About Me

I'm a Jordanian national currently Professor and Chair of the Department of English at the University of Jordan, which I joined in 1994. I obtained a PhD in Applied Linguistics (Language Acquisition) from the University of Reading, UK in 1994. Prior to my university experience, I worked for UNRWA for 17 years, as Academic Instructor, School Supervisor, Head of the English Language Committee, and finally as General Education Specialist-English at the UNRWA/UNESCO Institute of Education. The responsibilities of my last job included, interalia, supervising the teaching and learning of English in the UNRWA fields of operations, i.e. Jordan, Syria, Lebanon, West Bank and Gaza Strip, preparing curricula and training materials for distance education, and preparing self-learning materials for both students and teachers. I have also developed expertise in translation and interpreting. I teach translation and interpreting to BA and MA students, and so far I translated five books (four from English into Arabic and one from Arabic into English). I also served as an interpreter in a large number of conferences, local, regional and international. Most recently, I interpreted the speech of His Majesty King Abdulla II and the speech of His Holiness Benedict XVI during his visit to Jordan. More details are available in the attached CV. As my CV shows, I taught different courses at both BA and MA levels, e.g., Second Language Acquisition, Methods of Foreign/Second Language Teaching, Consecutive Translation, Interpreting, Psycholinguistics, Sociolinguistics, Discourse Analysis, Language Development, Contrastive Linguistics, Research Methods, and Writing. I can also teach Arabic to Speakers of other languages. I also published extensively in the field of language acquisition (acquisition of ESL and ASL, AFL, i.e. Arabic as first language) and contrastive linguistics. Moreover, I'm the second author of a series of English Language Textbooks for Arab learners. The series, Better English Now, covers Grades 1-10.
