Course outline: • Understand how normal intracranial pressure is maintained • State values of normal ICP in different ages • Understand the Monroe-Kellie doctrine • Understand the effects of increased intracranial pressure: o On function o On plain Xrays o On CT • Enumerate examples of cause for increased pressure • Understand the cerebral perfusion pressure • Understand the cerebral blood flow • Understand the causes and management of brain edema • Describe measures for treatment of increased intracranial pressure • Talk in detail about idiopathic increased intracranial pressure
  
NEUROSURGERY FOR FIFTH YEAR MEDICAL STUDENTS Course 2: Head Injury (1) Name: Cranio-cerebral Injuries 1 Staff member teaching course: Professor Walid Maani Course objectives: To understand the mechanisms of head injury and their effect on the brain, and to be able to recognize the various types of injuries of the scalp, the different types of fractures of the skull, and the different types of brain injury, and their effect of the consciousness and the function of the brain. The student must be able to recognize and separate serious from non serious type and act on this knowledge in the management. Course outline: • Understand the anatomy of the head and its components • The scalp: o Define the layers of the scalp o Discuss the injuries o Outliner management • The skull: o Classify fractures o Outline management • The brain: o Define mechanisms including acceleration decelarion injuries o Outline types of pathology o Explain management of closed head injuries • Show x-rays of all of the above • Show CT of all of the above

NEUROSURGERY FOR FIFTH YEAR MEDICAL STUDENTS Course 3: Head Injury (2) Name: Cranio-cerebral Injuries 2 Staff member teaching course: Professor Walid Maani Course objectives: To be able to continue talking about the secondary effects which happen in the brain following the primary injury and describe their management. The student must be able to enumerate the complications of head injuries and describe their management. Course outline: • Define secondary injuries • Enumerate secondary injuries and discuss in detail: o Ischemia o Hypoxia o Brain edema • Enumerate complications and divide them into early and late: o Talk about early complication in detail stating their occurrence, pathology, signs and symptoms investigations and management. This includes electrolyte imbalance, intracranial bleeding, epilepsy, hyperthermia, infection o Talk about late complication in detail stating their occurrence, pathology, signs and symptoms investigations and management. This includes epilepsy. Hydrocephalus, chronic hematomas and the post concussion syndrome.

Course outline: • Define what is an aneurysm. • Enumerate the types of aneurysms. • Define why aneurysms rupture. • Define the consequences of rupture and their effect on patients. • Explain how the patients present and discuss signs and symptoms • Discuss diagnosis and methods • Discuss categorization of patients according to clinical scales • Discuss management in detail • Discuss complications and outcome

NEUROSURGERY FOR FIFTH YEAR MEDICAL STUDENTS Course 5: Spinal Tumors Name: Spinal Tumors Staff member teaching course: Professor Walid Maani Course objectives: To be able to realize the prevalence and types of spinal tumors, and to recognize the signs and symptoms of spinal compression and take the essential steps in diagnosis. To understand the presentation of spinal metastases To understand the principals of management. Course outline: • Explain the anatomy of the cord and the relationship of cord segments to vertebrae and spinous processes. • State prevalence and social effects. • Talk in detail about acute and chronic cord compression • Classify Spinal tumors • Discuss extra dural tumors • Talk in detail about malignant tumors stating their method of spread and their effects. • Discuss Intra dural extramedullary tumors • Discuss intra dural intra medullary tumors • Explain and show examples of the effects of tumors on the vertebrae by using x-rays, CT and MRI • Examples of tumors must be discussed separately with imaging accompanying • Discuss management, complications and outcome
